Ying-He Liu began art training at an early age in Shanghai, China. As the daughter of two prominent scientists, Ms. Liu had the rare opportunities to study with two renowned Chinese artists - Yan Wen Liang, founder and President of Zhe Jiang Academy of Fine Arts, and Ha Ding, whose studio fostered a generation of Chinese artists in Shanghai, while working as a stage designer and scenery painter in a theatre. In 1978, she was admitted to An Hui Teachers’ University majoring in English Language and Literature.
In 1981, Ms. Liu transferred to the State University of New York at Stony Brook where she graduated Summa Cum Laude with BA in Fine Arts. She subsequently studied illustration in School of Visual Arts in NY City. In 1986, she joined Portraits, Inc. in New York City and became an American citizen. In the same year, she was employed as an illustrator by Backer Spielvogel Bates, a top New York advertising agency. Among many honors that she received during that period, she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and the Salmagundi Club in New York City in 1983.
Since 1990, Ms. Liu has devoted most of her career to portraiture. Year after year, she traveled to Europe, visiting countless museums and galleries, studying old masters’ works closely. She accredits this kind of learning as her most essential art education. Her paintings reflect her classic training-a combination of solid draftsmanship applied with a fluid painterly quality. Ms. Liu’s exceptional talent for capturing the essence of her subjects while achieving great aesthetic appeal has been greatly sought after for years. She has successfully completed over two hundred commissions and her clientele includes many leaders in medicine, government, business, academics, religion, and the arts as well as members of distinguished families. Her works can be found in museums, universities, hospitals, corporations, institutions and private residences.
Ms. Liu has exhibited in Cork Gallery in Lincoln Center, the Salmagundi Club and China House of Arts in New York City, Francesca Anderson Fine Arts in MA and many other group shows. The artist and her works have also been featured in numerous publications including New York Times, Boston Globe, Home and Garden, Town and Country, Southern Accents, Newsday, New York Post, New Jersey Star-Ledger, American Artist, International Artist and many more.
In 2006, she was awarded finalist in the Artist Magazine’s 23rd Annual Art Competition. In 2007, she was awarded finalist in the American Artist Cover Competition. In 2007, 2009, and 2010 she received Honorable Mention in the Portrait Society of America Members-Only Competitions.
